Why Kompas
Geography is not a list of names to learn by heart. It is knowing where you are and understanding why the world is the way it is: why it rains here, why a city lies on a river, why the sea comes and goes twice a day. Kompas always starts from a place you know.
Four blocks, always in the same order
Why, See it, Get it, Do it. Then the pitfalls, where you meet it in real life and a bit of history. Every topic shows what you need to know first and what comes next, so you see the route through the subject.
Exercises that never run out
Where possible, a generator makes every exercise: new numbers each time for scale, time zones or travel time, with the right answer, a hint and a worked solution. For facts, Kompas picks from fixed sets and shuffles them. Thousands of exercises per topic are tested automatically.
Hand-drawn maps
The maps in Kompas are schematic: simplified and drawn by hand, so you see what matters. They load nothing from elsewhere and work without a fast connection too. For exact borders, use an atlas.
Who makes Kompas
Kompas is made by Neal Van de Velde (nealvdv), who also made Draad, Ruit and Spoor. Questions, mistakes or ideas are always welcome.
Calm and private
No ads, no tracking, no required account, no streaks or notifications that make you feel guilty. What you can do is kept only on your own device.
What does Draft mean?
A topic labelled Draft has been written with care, but not yet checked by a geography teacher. Only after that check does the label go. If you see a mistake, let us know.

Kompas and Kaft
Kompas belongs to Kaft, a family of learning apps with an app for each subject. Part of Kompas is free, for the rest we ask a fair price. That keeps Kompas free of ads and tracking.
What does Kompas cost?
The learning path and the first 3 topics are free. For all of Kompas you choose one of these plans:

Where we come from
Kompas is made from a Christian conviction: the world is worth getting to know, and every child is valuable. The content itself is ordinary, neutral geography. What you notice is the way: patient, honest and caring for the earth and the people on it.
