Population and cities
Population density is the number of inhabitants per km². In cities many people live close together, in the countryside there is more space.
Why
In the centre of Brussels the houses stand wall to wall and the streets are busy, in a village in the Ardennes you mostly see woods and meadows. How do you compare how full a place is?
Just counting the inhabitants is not enough. A big municipality with many inhabitants can still feel spacious, a small town with fewer inhabitants can feel full.
That is why we divide the number of inhabitants by the area. Then you know how many people live on each square kilometre on average.
