Farming and food

Every Belgian region has its own farming, and every season its own harvest. Food from nearby and in season travels fewer kilometres.

First grade of secondaryAges 10 to 14Draft: Not yet checked by a geography teacher.

Why

There is an apple in your lunch box. Does it come from an orchard in Hesbaye or from the other side of the world, and how can you tell?

Everything you eat grows somewhere in a field, an orchard or a barn. Which farming a region has depends on the soil, the relief and the climate.

Not everything grows all year round. If you know what comes from here and when, you can choose food that does not have to travel as far.
