The earth turns: day, night and time zones

The earth turns around once in about 24 hours, from west to east. The side facing the sun has day. That is why clocks elsewhere show a different time.

First grade of secondaryAges 10 to 14Draft: Not yet checked by a geography teacher.

Why

It is 20:00 in the evening in Ghent and you call your cousin in New York. Why is it only afternoon there?

The earth is a ball that turns. The sun only ever lights up one half: there it is day, on the other half it is night.

As the earth turns, every place moves from the night side to the day side and back again. New York lies far to the west. The sun rises there hours later than here, and that is why the clock there is behind. In winter it is 14:00 there when it is 20:00 in Ghent.
