The seasons

The earth's axis is tilted by about 23.5°. So each hemisphere in turn leans towards the sun and away from it: summer and winter. The distance to the sun is not the cause.

Why

Around 21 June you can play outside in De Panne until late in the evening. In December you already cycle home in the dark after your hobby. Why is that?

The earth goes around the sun in a year. Its axis is always tilted by the same amount, about 23.5°, and always points the same way.

Around June the northern hemisphere leans towards the sun: the sun is high and the days are long. Around December it leans away from the sun: the sun is low and the days are short.
