Volcanoes and earthquakes
The earth's crust is made of plates that move slowly. Where they move apart or collide, volcanoes, mountains and earthquakes form.
Why
On the news you see a volcano in Iceland spitting lava, and sometimes you feel a light earthquake in Belgium yourself. What is happening deep under your feet?
The ground seems solid and still. Yet the outer layer of the earth drifts, in big pieces, very slowly over a hot layer below.
Where those pieces push against each other or move apart, things move: the ground shakes, mountains grow and molten rock comes up.
