Relief and contour lines

Contour lines join points at the same height. They let you read on a flat map how high a hill is and where it gets steep.

First grade of secondaryAges 10 to 14Draft: Not yet checked by a geography teacher.

Why

Cycling in the Flemish Ardennes or walking in the Ardennes: how do you know beforehand which climb will be hard?

A map is flat, the land is not. Still, you want to know where the road goes uphill, how high a summit is and where you had better not race down on your bike.

That is why mapmakers draw contour lines. If you can read them, you see a hill, a valley or a steep wall on a flat sheet.
