The coast and the sea
At the Belgian coast the sea rises and falls about twice a day. Dunes and dykes protect the low polder land behind it.
Why
In Ostend you put your towel right next to the water, and a few hours later you have to move it in a hurry. Why does the sea suddenly come so far?
The sea does not stand still. For a few hours it comes in, then it goes out again. If you go to the seaside, it is best to check the times of high and low tide.
Behind the beach lies land that is as high as, or even lower than, the sea at high tide. That land stays dry thanks to dunes and dykes.
